Celebrating 35 Years of Southern Cape Old Car Club

Dear SCOCC Members,

It is with great excitement and pride that we gather Saturday, the 3rd of June 2023 to commemorate the 35th Founding Anniversary of the Southern Cape Old Car Club. Since its inception on June 3, 1988, our club has been a haven for vintage car enthusiasts, a place where our shared passion for classic automobiles has thrived. On this special occasion, let us reflect on our journey and celebrate the milestones we have achieved together.

To mark this momentous event, the SCOCC organized a Gala evening at our beloved Clubhouse and “die BENZ.” The festivities commenced with a captivating photoshoot, capturing our members posing alongside their stunning classic cars in front of the clubhouse. It was delightful to witness everyone dressing according to the era of their vehicles, creating a mesmerizing display of automotive history. These photographs will undoubtedly serve as treasured memorabilia for years to come. Additionally, a specially designed button pin was presented to all attendees as a commemorative gift, symbolizing our unity and dedication to preserving the legacy of vintage cars.

While the enchanting photo session unfolded, we gathered for a convivial gathering over sherry and sherry cocktails, fostering camaraderie among members, old and new. As the evening progressed, we commenced the formal proceedings with Waldo Scribante, the current Chairman of the Southern Cape Old Car Club, extending a warm welcome to all honorable members, guests, and fellow enthusiasts. In his opening speech, he offered a glimpse into the club’s humble beginnings, sharing fond memories of the inaugural meeting that took place at the residence of Jack and Jean Boshoff on 3 Moodie Street in George. Indeed, those humble beginnings have led us to where we are today.

Acknowledging the tireless efforts and unwavering commitment of past and present members, Waldo Scribante raised his glass in a toast, expressing gratitude for their contributions to the growth and success of the club. Unfortunately, our esteemed member no. 1, Jack Boshoff, could not join us due to ill health. However, his son Peter Boshoff was present, ensuring that his father’s presence was felt on this significant occasion. Additionally, we were honored to have Leo Fick, wife of the late Paul Fick, one of the early members of our club and the founder of the George Old Car Show. It was on his farm, “Blackwood,” in Victoria Bay that the first show took place, etching its place in our club’s history.

We were delighted to welcome our oldest member present, Kobus Harris, with membership number 39, who regaled us with captivating anecdotes from the early days of the George Old Car Show and the club as a whole. Furthermore, we were privileged to have Philip Kuschke, the current President of the Southern African Veteran and Vintage Association (SAVVA) and past chairman of the SCOCC, deliver a special message of greetings on behalf of SAVVA, emphasizing the importance of preserving our automotive heritage.

The event was graced by the presence of esteemed individuals, including past chairmen Phillip Rosser, Philip Kuschke, and Pierre Olivier, as well as the current committee members: Waldo Scribante (Chairman), Philip Kuschke (Vice Chairman), Chris van Staden (Treasurer), Rensche Kühn (Secretary), Chris Kühn (Events), and Naas van Zyl (SAVVA). Their collective dedication and leadership have steered our club towards continued growth and success.

After the formalities were concluded, we were treated to a sumptuous four-course Tapas dinner meticulously prepared by Chef Chris Nortier of the Fat Fish. The culinary delights matched the ambiance of the evening and left our taste buds craving for more.

As the night drew to a close, it was with a tinge of sadness that we bid farewell to this memorable gathering. However, it also marked the beginning of an exciting new chapter as we embark on the journey towards the next five years. Let us cherish the memories we have created together and continue nurturing the spirit of camaraderie that defines our beloved Southern Cape Old Car Club.

On behalf of the entire committee, we express our heartfelt gratitude to all members and guests who joined us in celebrating this significant milestone. Without your passion and dedication, our club would not have thrived for 35 remarkable years. Here’s to the next adventure!

ONLY the BEST!
