Erfenistoer ’22: celebrating the true meaning of our motoring heritage

2018 Ford Veteran and Vintage Tour background

In 2008 the Southern Cape Old Car Club (SCOCC) organised a tour of some 700 km to celebrate the centenary of the Model T Ford in the Garden Route area. There were 43 cars that entered for this tour of which 37 cars were Model T Fords, the most seen together at one time in many, many years. The enthusiasm and camaraderie experienced during this tour has triggered a new excitement among veteran and vintage car enthusiasts and since that tour in 2008 these cars have been seen more frequently on tours and rallies.

The large number of Model T Ford owners have applied pressure on certain members to organise another tour of this magnitude. The result was the birth of the 2018 Ford Veteran and Vintage Tour. In essence this tour will be celebrating 110 years of the Model T Ford and 90 years of the Model A Ford. The target group for the tour is Ford cars manufactured before the end of 1930. A few entries of other rare and unique brands of veteran and vintage cars have also been accepted.

The passion to get these old cars on the road again has resulted in the recent establishment of the Model T Ford Club of South Africa (MTFCSA). The MTFCSA is affiliated to the Model T Ford Club of America and is currently operating under the guardianship of the SCOCC until it becomes a fully-fledged SAVVA affiliated club.

The organising committee under the chairmanship of Philip Kuschke comprises largely members of the MTFCSA but also members of the SCOCC. Due to the scenic beauty of the Garden Route and Little Karoo as well as the good co-operation from the local authorities and fellow road users it was an easy decision to organise the tour in this area. Members of the public are generally very appreciative and considerate with the slow moving old cars on our roads here.
