GEORGE NEWS – The Southern Cape Old Car Club (SCOCC) presents the 19th annual George Old Car Show this weekend on 14 and 15 February at PW Botha College, York Street, George.
To coincide with Valentine’s Day, a special selection of red cars will be on display, and fun prizes will go to the best dressed Valentine’s Day couple, as well as couples best depicting the theme of Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow.
The show starts with the annual veteran tour of more than 20 vintage cars that will leave Prince Albert on Friday morning for a leisurely drive to George, where they are expected to arrive around 15:00.
Nearly 1 000 items have been entered for this year’s show, including vintage, classic and late model cars; vintage tractors and farm implements; and vintage and new motorcycles – the Harley-Davidson demo truck will provide motorcycles for trial runs. More than 5 000 model cars will also be on display and for sale.
George Mayor Charles Standers will officially open the George Old Car Show at 10:00 on Saturday morning. The full programme is available on the SCOCC website, www.scocc.co.za.
The programme includes a continual parade of cars in the main arena. Competitions, lucky draws and games will be presented throughout the show.
The auction of vintage and classic cars by House of Classic and Sports Cars in Knysna is another highlight. Altogether 23 cars, including a 1927 1,5t Chevrolet truck, a 1952 Open Kapitan and 1955 Ford Customline, will be on view from 08:00 till 12:30, during which time buyers (in possession of a credit card) must register to take part in the auction.
The organisers aim to establish the show as a destination event for men, women and children. Besides the exhibition, a selection of approximately 30 stalls, handpicked from local Saturday morning markets in the area, will offer arts, crafts and homemade delicacies for sale. Food stalls abound and the SAB beer garden has been enlarged to accommodate more thirsty and hungry patrons.
A free play park for children aged three to nine has been established with the contribution of George businesses. The enclosed area provides jumping castles, other activities and games under adult supervision.
On Saturday the gates open at 08:00 and close at 17:00, and on Sunday show time is from 08:00 to 13:00.
Entrance fees on Saturday are R40 (adult), R30 (pensioner), R20 (child) and on Sunday R20 (adult), R15 (pensioner), R10 (child). A percentage of the proceeds will be donated to selected charities.
