Ready, Set, … its time for the Erfenistoer 2023!

Gearing up for Erfenistoer 2023!

George, Garden Route (August 2023) – As August rolls around, South Africa prepares to celebrate Heritage Month, and amidst this anticipation, members and companions of the Southern Cape Old Car Club are meticulously fine-tuning their cherished automobiles for the annual Erfenistoer (Heritage Tour). This year’s event is scheduled to take place from September 22-25, promising a remarkable journey.

The Erfenistoer is a significant occasion for both newcomers and returning participants, and the upcoming edition will continue the tradition of featuring beloved classic vehicles. Serving as a flagship event for the Southern Cape Old Car Club, the Erfenistoer is a jubilant celebration of South African automotive heritage, set against the breath taking backdrop of the Western Cape’s most scenic roads.

The 2023 itinerary is set to guide the tour through the enchanting roads of the Overberg region, revealing the beauty of the landscape along the way. Arniston and Bonnievale have been chosen as the overnight resting spots, adding a touch of quaint charm to the journey. Yet, beyond these picturesque havens, the route is dotted with fascinating historical landmarks and captivating sights.

This year marks the 11th edition of this unique event, organized by the Southern Cape Old Car Club and proudly supported by Halfway Toyota George. The fleet will commence its journey from Halfway’s headquarters, situated off Knysna Road. Enthusiastic crowds of vintage car aficionados are expected to gather and bid the tour participants a heartfelt ‘bon voyage’ on the morning of September 22.

Day 1 of the tour will lead the drivers from George towards Swellendam, a town with a rich history dating back to its establishment as the third-oldest magisterial district in South Africa in 1743. A highlight of the day’s route is a visit to the Drostdy Museum, followed by a departure to The Dunes at Arniston, passing by the southernmost tip of the continent, Cape Agulhas.

The second day’s itinerary includes stops at alluring attractions such as the Danger Point Lighthouse and Birkenhead Brewery, one of the country’s earliest craft breweries dating back to 1998. While only the navigators are permitted to indulge in the brewery’s craft brews, a leisurely drive back to Arniston awaits everyone in the afternoon.

On the third day of the Erfenistoer, participants can anticipate a visit to Stettyn Family Vineyards before embarking towards Bonnievale’s renowned Angora Stud Guest Farm. This charming farm is home to a classic car museum, offering a delightful experience for heritage-minded cruisers. The final leg of the tour on September 25 will guide the convoy back to George via Adams Kraal, near Ladismith on the R323.

Erfenistoer’s route also meanders through other quaint towns and villages such as Bredasdorp, Baardskeerdersbos, Gansabbai, Napier, Caledon, Villiersdorp, Montagu, Barrydale and Riversdale. Thus, the journey not only commemorates Heritage Month but also aligns with Tourism Month, allowing participants to relish the diverse attractions showcased by the Overberg region.

Keep an eye out for the impressive line-up of 30 special cars, forming the core group of participants for this year’s Heritage Tour from September 22-25.
